Running alongside your RMM
Overseer installs as its own lightweight agent and works beside the remote management tool you already have. This page explains what each one does and how the two are connected.
Two tools, two jobs
Overseer does not ask you to give up your remote management tool. It installs as its own lightweight agent, the Overseer agent, and runs beside whatever you already use.
The two do different work. Your remote management tool carries on doing what you use it for today. Overseer is a desired-state engine: you declare what should be true on each computer, and Overseer detects where a computer differs, acts to close the gap and verifies the result. It does that work through its own agent.
What the integration adds
An integration with your remote management tool saves you from entering the same records twice.
- Computers. The computers the tool already manages are imported into Overseer, without an onboarding session being run on each one first.
- Clients. Each client in the tool is matched to a tenant, so an imported computer lands under the right client.
- Detail. What the tool knows about a computer is added to that computer's record.
- Remote control. You start remote control through the tool you already have.
Scripts can use the link as well. A script working on a computer can read the record your remote management tool holds for that same computer.
Getting the agent onto computers
Your remote management tool already reaches the computers you look after. Use it to run the Overseer agent installer on them. Each computer is then assigned to its client and gets its first maintenance session, which is when the deployments enforced as Onboarding run.
The link works in the other direction too. Your remote management tool's agent is software like any other, so a deployment can declare it Installed. Where the tool issues a separate installation token for each client, the integration supplies the right one for the computer being worked on.
Using Overseer on its own
The integration is a convenience, not a requirement. Overseer can be used on its own, or as part of the Overmind suite. Without a remote management tool, you create your tenants yourself and bring each computer in through onboarding.
